Note: Please bookmark or hold on to this letter as it contains details about the Ho`olaulea and Grandparents’ Day.
Welcome March — but not the rain, wind, flooded roads, and soaring humidity. Thankfully, we’ve had mostly intermittent rain and overcast skies during the day, so the children have been able to play outside (but not on the muddy ball field). Nonetheless, the teachers and I can always count on the children to turn on the sunshine with their high energy.
Ordinarily, we wouldn’t be sending out a packet until the end of the month to get out the next month’s calendar of events. However, there are deadlines and important events ahead, and we’re concerned that you’re not reading updated information about the school on the elementary website.
Scrip and/or t-shirt orders for the Ho`olaulea are due tomorrow, Friday, March 3. Another scrip order form is included in today’s packet. As I had explained in last week’s letter, students in kindergarten through grade five will begin walking at 11:30am to the middle and high school campus for the annual event, along with the faculty. We’re encouraging all parents to pre-order $10 of scrip for their children, which will be adequate to purchase lunch and play a few games. The faculty could use some help from parents to help supervise small groups of children. If you’re interested, please contact your child’s classroom teacher. We encourage you to take the family to the Ho`olaulea, which ends at 7:30pm.
And then there’s the Grandparents’ Day celebration on March 16. Invitations were mailed to grandparents, but if your child cannot have grandparents attend, we would like your child to ask a favorite aunt or uncle, or you can join us. We need to have the names of those attending by March 8, next Thursday, so that we can order the food for the continental breakfast and have tags prepared.
We’ve made a slight change in the program for Grandparents’ Day. The musical performance will begin at 9:00am, after breakfast, then grandparents and guests will visit their grandchild’s classroom(s) after the performance at 9:45am.
Parking for Grandparents’ Day: Grandparents and guests will be directed to parking by the gym or on the football field. Shuttle service via our school bus (driven by Mr. Louie) or golf carts will be provided from the gym to the elementary school. We will provide the same shuttle service back to the gym after the event. Or guests can be dropped off at the turnaround. Please let us know ahead (call 441-3800) if there are any grandparents who are in wheelchairs.
This is the eighth year of our Grandparents’ Day celebration, and we surely hope for sunny weather! (We’ll be putting up tents on the courtyard for the program.)
We have lots going on in the classrooms! All the multiage 1-2 classrooms have been exploring and researching ancient Egypt, and their presentations begin next week. Their culminating celebration is a feast in the Dining Room. You’ll be able to spot a first-second grader next Friday, March 10, when they come to school dressed in their ancient Egyptian clothing. M 3-4B presents a slide presentation today on their inquiry about the ahapua`a, the land division system in ancient Hawaii. And there are more presentations planned the following week.
We have cancelled Spring Camp because of very low enrollment. It seems most of our families are planning home- or away-vacations. If you’ve been considering elementary summer school at MPI, I encourage you to send your application in right away because enrollment is now open to the public.
Have a safe weekend, families. Great weather for cozy read-alouds at home with hot cocoa and cookies.
For our children,
