The "Real" Thursday Letter

You’ve checked your child’s backpack for the white envelope, so here’s the “real” Thursday letter (Monday was “rehearsal”). I’m happy to report that aside from some logistics concerns that need tweaking (e.g., transitions between classes on from recess to the classroom), it’s been a remarkable four days of school. I have several reminder items:

Parents, please do not park and wait for your children in the autoline. This backs up traffic for everyone behind you. Unless the adult supervisor indicates that you can wait in the autoline, you must exit the campus on Maile Way and re-enter on Kaala Street.

  • Drop-off and pick-up for students in kindergarten through grade two is on the top lot (area closest to Wilcox, the main office). Drop-off and pick-up for grades 3-5 is the bottom area, and students must walk up the stairs to the campus. The only exception is if you arrive on campus before 7:15am, students in grades 3-5 may be dropped off at the turnaround.
  • For parents of preschoolers who need to come early because you’re also dropping off an older child in the elementary school, I suggest coming to the campus closer to 7:40am so that you can park closer to Wilcox. You may wait in the dining room with your child until the preschool doors open.
  • If you would like email notification as a reminder that a new Thursday letter has been posted on the school website, please sign up on the elementary webpage. If you signed up for notification last year, you need to sign up again since we’ve purged our notification database due to the addition of new families or changes in email addresses.

  • Your child’s class list is included in the envelope. The list is intended for in-house purposes. Parents need contact information for sending birthday invitations, and working on committees for class activities or school events. Note any corrections and send the draft roster back to school in the white envelope. A revised list of your child’s class only will be sent to you in next week’s Thursday packet.
  • The `Ohana (preschool and elementary parent group) will have its first meeting on Wednesday, August 23, 5:00-6:00pm, in the Dining Room. Please join us as we organize the calendar of schoolwide events for our children.
  • Every first Friday of the month is “Choice Day” — children may come to school in “free” dress, as long as the criteria for free dress are met (see the parent/student handbook). However, if a class excursion is scheduled on a first Friday and all students on excursions must wear the MPI school uniform, the students in that class may celebrate Choice Day the day before the excursion.

Beginning next week, the teachers will be posting class news on the preschool and elementary website. Check out their respective weblogs and photo galleries.

I am making steady progress learning every child’s name, particularly our newest friends! Give me two more weeks.

Keep cool and hydrated. Romp through a water sprinkler.

For our children,

Edna L. Hussey
Principal
