Assemblies and Fire Drills

Your child’s safety is very important to us. This past Monday, the entire school (preschool through grade 12) held a fire drill. (The state fire department requires elementary schools to run monthly practice drills.) Every class in the entire school reports to a designated area throughout the campus — the middle and high school to the football field and the preschool and elementary to the baseball field. All teachers and staff are required to evacuate with students and take roll. We return to our respective classrooms and offices after the principals have reported to President Rice or the Director of Facilities and Maintenance Hank Howlett that every student is accounted for and in a safe area.

MPI Chaplain Bob Brown is taking a two-week hiatus for medical reasons. In his stead, Reverend James Koyama, former pastor at Lihue Christian Church and current associate pastor at the Community Church of Honolulu in Nu`uanu, has been doing our chapel services. At this morning’s service, the students in Kindergarten through second grade learned about singing as a way of lifting our spirits. Your child may be whistling bird songs today! Listen carefully for that little whistle.

The entire preschool and elementary gathered in the dining room for the September assembly. At each assembly, the classes take turns sharing what they’re learning — a science project, poetry, a new physical education skill or game, an inquiry project, etc. The Multiage 3-4 students shared a lively Hawaiian song about voyaging canoes, and the Kindergartners sang and performed a song about the human body, their current unit of study in science. We acknowledged students and faculty/staff celebrating September birthdays, and a few children came up to show us the birthday books they’re donating to their respective classroom libraries. The next assembly will be October 25. Parents are always welcome.

The ILH sports season is in full swing. For all ILH varsity volleyball, baseketball, and baseball season games where admission is charged, students may enter free by showing their 2006-2007 MPI I.D. card, Students without a school I.D. will have to pay admission.

For varsity regular season football games at the Aloha Stadium when Pac-Five is a participant, students may enter free with their MPI 2006-2007 ID card and the designated Pac-Five coupon for each game. For Pac-Five varsity football games at school sites, students may enter free with their MPI I.D. card. If you would like your child to have football coupons (one sheet per student), please call our school office at 441-3800 or send us an email or handwritten note, and we’ll send home the coupons with your child.

In next week’s letter, I’ll report on how our students in grades 4-6 have been doing in the Christian School Athletic League-sponsored volleyball games for boys. Next up will be girls’ volleyball.

Just two more weeks until Moon Over Manoa (October 7). Our volunteer parents on the Steering Committee have been working hard collecting your contributions and setting up the class baskets. This is an event not to be missed!

For our children,

Edna L. Hussey
Principal
