Our Camp Erdman Experience!

As I'm sure you have heard by now, everyone had a super time at Camp Erdman!
I'd like to share with you some of the experiences your child had while on the North Shore. The students buddied up with a partner and wrote about their activities. We hope you enjoy reading them.

Also, please check out our gallery as all the photos from camp are there. See if you and your child can match up the activity with the photo!

Thank you for sharing your son/daughter with me--I really enjoyed getting to know them better!

Archery and Swimming
By LT and SW

In archery you got to shoot five arrows. There were six targets to shoot at. There were five parts in a target. Five people could shoot at a time. We had forty five minutes of archery. We really enjoyed archery since some of us got a “bulls eye.”

In swimming you had to rinse off before going in the pool. You had to pass a test to be able to go in the deep end. In the deep end you could jump in a certain spot. If you stay in the shallow end you could play with toys. We had forty five minutes to swim. Swimming was really fun because we got to jump in the pool after a long hot day!!!

Night Explorers
By JK and CC

Night Explorers is all about your five senses. Test one was really fun. First one of the staff turned off the lights. Then she gave us markers and she wanted us to guess what color the markers were.

The second test was fun, too. We each had a film canister with something in it. We had to find the matching sound. Then we checked if we were right by looking in it.

The third test, in our opinion, was one of the best. There were ten cans. Every can had something in it. You had to feel the thing in the can and write what you thought it was on paper.

The fourth test was not really a test at all. First the staff gave us fruit cups. Then they gave us a spoon. After we enjoyed eating our fruit cups. Which was our sense of taste.

Group Challenge II
By AH and SR

We had to swing on a rope without touching the ground. The object of the game was to get the whole class to the same wooden block and back. We couldn’t touch the ground because we were pretending that it was quick sand. We pretended that the wooden block was a grocery store and we needed food.

In another activity, we also pretended that we went on a trip to Antarctica. We had to get back to our plane and we were on a different iceberg. We had two long planks to get from one place to another. Problem was we all wouldn’t fit on one wooden block. The other problem was that one plank was shorter. So we had to put two together (one on top of the other.) to make it long enough to reach the other wooden block.

At first it was frustrating. Then after Zack (one of the councilors) gave us some hints we found a way to do it.

WE LEARNED SO MUCH!

Group Challenge I

By TK and MC

In Group Challenge I we played a name game. We played a name game because our counselor wanted to learn people’s names. We also added movement. We also played an astronaut game. What you had to do is one person got blindfolded while the other people were linked together to save the blue monkey. We actually had to untie our shoe laces in order to save the blue monkey.

It was hard to remember every body’s name.
It was also hard to untie people’s shoe laces.

Geology
By HF and AS

Geology is the study of rocks.

There are 2 kinds of volcanic rocks. They are a’a and pahoehoe. A’a is very rough and pahouhoe is very smooth. There are also 3 more kinds of rocks. They are called igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic.

Igneous shots out of the volcano. Sedimentary stays inside the volcano. Metamorphic stays outside the volcano. Cheimei,(the person that works there) gave us a cookie and we pretended that it was the earth. Then we opened the cookie and said the layers of the earth. Then we ate the cookie.

Lastly, Cheimei drew the Hawaiian Islands on a plate. Then she got gel under the islands and she squeezed the gel. It made a blob of gel or an island! That showed us about the “hot spot” that created our island chain.

Astronomy
By CW and IM

Astronomy is the study of stars and planets. Here’s what we learned at camp about astronomy.

At Camp Erdman, we used telescopes to locate the stars and the moon. We saw many interesting stars at campfire and on the grass field, Thursday night. We also saw many planets in a cool slideshow. When we looked at the stars outside at night, it was fun using the star charts.

We had a GREAT TIME AT CAMP!!!

The Mauka Hike
By JR and IB

On the mauka hike we went into the crystal caves. There we saw green crystals, white crystals and skeletons of scorpions. We heard a legend about a man that could change into a pig, a boy and a kukui nut tree. There was a dried up waterfall. Once we got to the top we saw a great view of the ocean. Everyone had a great time!!!

Beach Ecology
By AK and SH

Beach Ecology is the study of plants and animals working together at the beach. We learned about the sand, wind, and waves!

Sand was crushed by humans and waves over millions of years. We had a magic sandbox to tell us what was in there. Things that were in there were big and small coral, rocks, dead skeletons, and many other things. We had to hammer a sock filled with coral, rocks, and skeletons to show what happens over time.

We also learned about waves. Waves are bumps in the water. We learned that water stays in place and only moves up and down. Wind makes different shapes in the waves.

Wind is important because it transfers our sand and makes waves.
We learned so much in this activity!

Predator / Prey
By EJ and GH

It was fun playing this game. It was exciting seeing what team we got. Carnivores are meat eaters, they ate everything. Omnivores are plant and meat eaters, they eat herbivores. Herbivores are plant eaters, they just hid.

It was amazing that some of the things that happened in the game could happen in real life. For example, hawks could eat cardinals and butterflies, and cardinals then could eat the butterflies.

It was fun being a herbivore because we had to hide from the people who weren’t on our team or other herbivores.
