Camp Erdman articles, language arts, and a note about homework

Yesterday we discussed two new projects that we will be starting in language arts. First, we talked about book reports. Each student is to present a book report to the class before Wednesday, November 22. The purpose of the book report is to share and advertise a book with the class so that others will want to read it. Students should be sharing a book that they have recently read. The book report presentation consists of a speech about the book and a visual aid. Please click the following link to view the book report guidelines.

We also discussed literature circles. Tomorrow, students will choose a book and become part of a literature circle. A literature circle consists of four or five students who are all reading the same book. Together the students create a reading schedule. Twice weekly each literature circle comes together to discuss the book. Reading homework will now consist of preparing for literature circle discussions. Please check the website on Monday for more information about literature circles.

Due to the two new projects in language arts, our homework schedule has been modified. From now on, the students will have two weeks to complete a Wordly Wise lesson. This change will be effective this week. Therefore, Lesson 6 will not be due until Monday, October 23. Students are still allowed to move on to the next lesson, but before doing so, the lesson must be turned in and corrected. However, each lesson must be completed and turned in by the due date. Please contact Mrs. Lorenzana with any comments or questions.

Please continue reading on for student-written articles about their experience at Camp Erdman. More articles will be posted next week:

Beach Ecology
By: LS and SS

In beach ecology we learned how the ocean makes sand. It makes sand by the coral beating against each other and the waves pushing it against the other sand that it made. Later, Miss Julie, our counselor, sent us to find the things that we thought made up sand. Some people found rocks, leaves, shells, and coral. After, we went back and put the things that we found into Miss Julie's gym sock (it was clean). When we put everything in the sock, everyone got a chance to hammer it with a small hammer. When we were done, there was a little bit of sand and many things left over. The things left over were many rocks and some shells.

Hope you enjoyed it !!!

The End !!!

Campfire
By: MS

On the last night we went campfire, we sat around, sang songs like "Jellyfish" and "Mr. Seaman," we saw the counselors throwing wood in the fire. We also saw someone throw their glowstick in the tree and it was stuck there.

Hiking
By JM

On the second day we went on a hike called the Mauka Hike. One story that we heard was about the dead man and parachutist that was existing. We also learned how to call a bird. It sounded like a whistle. In the woods some people saw boars hunting. My fabovrite thing was hiking up to crystal cave. There was an upper and a lower cave. We went to both. To get to highest cave we had to use a ladder and climb it. It was hard work. We got to the top we found little crystals. It was beautiful. After that, we hiked back down to rest.

Archery
By KY

When we went to Camp Erdman, we got to do archery! It was so much fun! We all got to have one turn. One parent wanted to do archery and Mrs.Lorenzana did archery too. It was so fun! On RB's first time, he got it right by the bullseye! And on AC’s first time, she got the arrow right in the center of the Bullseye!!! It was so exiting how RB and AC made the arrow go right into the target board. Miss Chamie taught us how to do archery. It was so fun! It was awesome how everyone tried to hit the Bullseye.

Predator vs. Prey
By: MT and SC

At Camp Erdman we played a game called Predator v.s Prey. There were different teams. MT was on the snail team and SC was on butterfly team. The point of the game was to survive by getting cards. There where 7 teams. The groups where split by their diet. The groups where the carnivores, the omnivores, and the herbivores. The teams had to get cards to survive. The cards were food cards, water cards, shelter cards, and life cards. Each team had a team leader that held the cards. If you made a peace sign you would be on times out. Most of the teams survived.

Electric Maze
By: JN and RB

This is about Electric Maze and it is a game. How you play is you have to figure out a path way and when you get it wrong the teacher says “bzzzzz”! and you have to go to the back of the line. Electric Maze has 30 squares. You have to figure out the combination and you can only go sideways, forward, back, or diagonal. You cannot skip a square and if you do, you have to go to the back of the line. A guy in our class named TT found the combination and he’s in fourth grade.
